Items
Everything a player carries falls into four kinds. What you find tells you which one it is.
Gear is anything you hold. It divides into four kinds, and the kind tells you what a thing does, not how rare it is.
Hardware is permanent. You find it once and it keeps working, no matter how many times you use it.
Contraband is used up. It gets you past something you didn't solve on your own, and that comes at a cost. A puzzle beaten with Contraband is marked cracked, not solved.
Fragments are pieces of a mind that was scattered. They don't do anything by themselves. Holding one is how you bring a memory back within reach.
Artefacts belong to a place before they belong to you. Find them by being there, or by solving what that place is hiding.
Relics are different again. Not a fifth kind, a fact that cuts across the other four: a Relic exists once. Whoever holds it is the only one who does. See the Relics page.
